Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), also known as holy basil, is one of the most revered natural herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Considered sacred in many cultures, this herb is prized for its pure, uplifting energy and abundant health benefits.

What Does Tulsi Do?

The health benefits mentioned above are just the beginning of what tulsi has to offer. This lovely aromatic herb is also considered an adaptogen, helping the body cope with stress, promoting mental clarity, and supporting deep rejuvenation. 

While it is considered energetically heating, tulsi also has the unique ability to remove excess heat and help regulate body temperature, bringing greater balance to the system as a whole.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, holy basil is excellent for balancing both vata and kapha doshas. It can be aggravating for pitta if taken in excess.

How Much Tulsi Should Someone Take?

That said, tulsi is considered safe for most people and we recommend taking anywhere from 500–2000mg per day.

Is Tulsi the Same Thing as Basil?

Though they do belong to the same family, tulsi is not the same plant as the common culinary basil so often used for cooking. There are several varieties of basil and of these, holy basil is one of the most well-known for its power as a medicinal herb.
